The fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is expected to come aboard this year's Cannes film festival.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will screen out of competition at the French festival on 14 May, following its world premiere at Disneyland on 7 May, Variety reports (paywall).

While the Disney film might not seem like standard Cannes fare at first glance, the festival does have a tradition of hosting more commercial Hollywood work. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, for example, had its world premiere at Cannes in 2008. The decision could raise the event's international profile, by drawing Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz on to its red carpet.

The pirate film would join a lineup that already includes Woody Allen's festival opener Midnight in Paris, which features an appearance by Carla Bruni, the wife of the French president.

Also showing is Gus van Sant's Restless, starring Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper, the late Dennis Hopper's son. It opens the Un Certain Regard alternative selection. Van Sant won the Palme d'Or in 2003 with Elephant.

The full list of the films in competition at Cannes will be announced on Thursday.

This week the festival announced that it would be awarding an annual honorary Palme d'Or for directors of "authoritative" work who have never won the top prize at the festival. This year's recipient will be the Italian director of Last Tango in Paris and The Last Emperor, Bernardo Bertolucci.
